It is important to keep up with your teeth cleaning every six months to avoid more invasive procedures. Teeth scaling is done during a deep cleaning of your teeth. Teeth scaling is combined with root planning to remove stubborn plaque and tartar from above and below your gum line. This is done to treat gum disease. During teeth scaling, the hygienist will use an ultrasonic tool or manual scaler to clean deep periodontal pockets. This is done to prevent gum recession, tooth loss, and halitosis (bad breath).
If you are in need of a deep cleaning, this is when scaling and root planning are needed. This procedure is designed to treat gum disease and prevent further oral health complications. Unlike routine cleanings, which focus on removing plaque and tartar above the gumline, scaling and root planing target areas underneath the gums where harmful bacteria thrive.
Brushing, flossing, or using mouthwash can be helpful to avoid bad breath. If the bad breath does not go away, this can be a sign of gum disease. Bacteria trapped beneath the gums release odors, which scaling can eliminate by thoroughly cleaning these areas underneath the gumline.
After your cleaning, our dentist measures the depth of the spaces between your teeth and gums. If your pockets measure 4 millimeters or more, it indicates gum disease, and scaling will be recommended.
Signs that you might need scaling:
Gums could sometimes bleed during brushing or flossing. If your gums bleed regularly or excessively, it may indicate gum inflammation or infection.
Healthy gums look pink and feel firm. Gums that look red, swollen, or feel tender to the touch are showing signs of gum irritation or infection. If plaque is accumulating under the gum line, it can cause tenderness. Scaling will be needed to restore your gums’ health.
Persistent Bad Breath (Halitosis)
Removing the bacteria underneath your gumline is needed to avoid bone loss. If you notice your gums pulling away, or your teeth look longer than usual, you may have gum recession. This creates pockets between the teeth and gums where bacteria can accumulate.
You need an immediate appointment with a dentist if you notice changes in your bite or gaps forming between teeth. Gum disease can cause damage to the bone and tissue supporting your teeth. If left untreated, it can cause your teeth to loosen and move. At this point, you might be referred to a periodontist.
Deep Gum Pockets
