How Many Times Should You Brush Your Teeth?

Brushing your teeth is a very important component of maintaining proper oral hygiene. While it might come as a surprise, it is possible to overbrush your teeth. This is especially true if you fail to replace your toothbrush on an as-needed basis. Once your bristles begin to wear out, your toothbrush can become very abrasive and damage your enamel. Below, we will be going over some of the tips to avoid damaging your teeth from either over brushing or brushing incorrectly.

Tips for brushing your teeth properly:

1. Two to three times a day

Firstly, you should be brushing your teeth anywhere from 2 to 3 times per day. The brush that you use to clean your teeth should fit your mouth and be the appropriate size. At the same time, it should feature soft bristles. You will want to replace your toothbrush as soon as the bristles have apparently worn down. That way, you can avoid using a toothbrush that can cause damage to your tooth’s enamel. You should be using small strokes on your teeth in order to properly clean the outside of your teeth and between your teeth.

2. Floss your teeth

Another important thing that you are going to want to be sure to include in your oral hygiene routine would be to floss your teeth a minimum of once per day. By doing this, you will be able to effectively remove any of the remaining food that gets stuck in between your teeth that your toothbrush failed to remove. Also, it will help to get rid of harmful bacteria and/or plaque that gets trapped between your teeth as well.

3. Manual or Electric

Depending on what kind of toothbrush you prefer to use will dictate how often you should be brushing your teeth. Because electric toothbrushes are going to be much more powerful and potentially abrasive, you should stick to brushing your teeth around twice per day if you are using an electric toothbrush. Twice per day should be sufficient to clean your teeth effectively. If you happen to be using soft bristle manual brushes to brush your teeth, you can brush your teeth three times per day in order to effectively brush them and remove harmful plaque.

4. Gum Disease or Gum Problem

Another thing that should affect how often you brush your teeth is whether or not you already suffer from gum problems. If you suffer from gum disease or other problems related to your gums, you will want to be sure to brush your teeth properly each and every time. Those that suffer from gum problems should use a good quality electric toothbrush to ensure that they are effectively disrupting the bacteria that can get caught in the gumline of your teeth.

Overall, there are a lot of factors that come into play when it comes to brushing your teeth properly. By following the tips above, you should be able to keep your teeth and gums as healthy as possible and avoid over brushing.
