How Long does a Dental Bridge Last at Cherrydale Family Dental

Dental bridges which are properly cared for can last for a decade or more. A dental bridge is a common solution for the replacement of missing teeth. Bridges aid in preventing the movement of the remaining adjacent healthy teeth. As with most types of dental procedures, various factors impact the life expectancy of a bridge. In order to prolong the life of a bridge, it is critical for patients to practice good oral hygiene and consume a well-balanced, nutritious diet.

Various sources have different opinions on how long a dental bridge should last. However, according to the Cleveland Clinic, dental bridges should last an average of 5-7 years. In some cases, bridges may last for more than 10 years. Practicing good oral hygiene helps to ensure the dental bridge lasts as long as possible.

During the placement of a dental bridge, the adjacent teeth are ground down. The removal of the enamel is needed to ensure proper fit of the crown and to properly support the prosthetic tooth. When the healthy teeth are modified in this way, it unfortunately increases the patient’s risk for decay, infection, and gum disease. When the health teeth are adjusted, it also increases the risk for undergoing a root canal in the future. In cases where one of the supporting teeth fails, it also places the dental bridge at risk for failure.

In order to preserve a bridge and extend its lifespan, patients should consume a nutritious and well-balanced diet. Softer foods which are cut into small pieces are ideal. Foods which can damage the bridge should also be avoided. Patients should focus on consuming fruit, vegetables and fiber. Dental bridge patients should avoid eating large amounts of sugary and starchy foods as these foods can cause decay. Patients should also avoid eating hard or sticky snacks as these foods can place excessive pressure on the bridge and result in damage. This can include snacks such as nuts, caramel, popcorn, gum, and hard candy.

Lifespan

In many ways, properly caring for a dental bridge is similar to caring for the natural teeth. Good oral hygiene practices include brushing the teeth at least twice each day and daily flossing. Patients should also make regular visits to the dentist for an examination and professional cleaning. Most dentist recommend making these visits about every six months, but patients should follow their dentists recommendation.

Some patients find it helpful to use a special fluoride toothpaste to fight against decay and cavities. Practicing good oral hygiene helps ensure the bridge and gums are free of debris-causing decay and remain healthy. Many dentists suggest using a floss threader to floss around a bridge.

Bridge Failure

While it is common for patients to question the how long they can expect dental bridges to last, there is unfortunately no easy answer. The life expectancy of a bridge depends on many factors, including the patient’s diet and oral hygiene. Patients who are cautious and diligent in properly caring for their dental bridge can often maintain the bridge for 10 years or more. Bridges are an excellent tooth-replacement solution.

Follow up with your dentist to determine if you may be a good candidate for a dental bridge.
